Damage Prevention Meetings

The New York City and Long Island One Call/Dig Safely, Inc. has created a Damage Prevention Sub-Committee to explore all aspects of the One Call process and make recommendations to the Members' Board of Directors. This Committee is requesting your help as we strive to unite all stakeholders in the Dig Safely efforts. Excavators, Underground Utility Operators, Municipalities, and Insurance Companies as well as the One Call Center itself, have the same common goal, and that is Damage Prevention. The Damage Prevention Sub-Committee has scheduled their meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 9:30 A.M., to be held at various locations in the New York City and Long Island area. These forums will give the participants the opportunity to analyze and share key information that will help prevent future underground damages. We encourage those of you wishing to attend our next meeting to contact Mr.Mike McMahon at:MMcmahon@SCWA.com to obtain location details.

Mandatory One Call Membership

In 1997, a change in New York State law made it mandatory for all municipalities and owners of underground utility lines to participate in the One Call system serving their area. (Anyone requiring an application for membership should contact a manager at 1-800-524-7603.)
Just prior to this change from voluntary to mandatory membership, the number of facility owners receiving one-call notifications was a mere 24 in early 1997.
Today, there are over 100 members in NYC/LI One Call Center and the number continues to grow. A marked increase has been seen in the number of municipalities joining the ranks of participating members. Compared to minimal municipal involvement in early 1997, there are presently 34 participating municipal entities in the One Call Center. This group is comprised of various counties, cities, townships and incorporated villages in the Long Island area.
A breakdown of current-day membership, by category, follows.

AT&T wireless free #dig

For AT&T wireless customers, calling the One Call Center is free of any charges. Using your wireless phone you can reach the New York City and Long Island One Call Center by keying the four digits #dig.
The company has been pursuing a national deployment for months and now has New York City along with Atlanta, Charlotte, Orlando, Miami, Denver, and Los Angeles up and running. The area where the call is originated from will determine which local One Call Center will be reached. Other wireless providers in the future may also offer this feature.
